(Music: HERE COMES THE SUN, Harrison) (info./disclaimers) (glossary) (index) (gardening guide)
Here come the slugs (do-n-do-do)
Here come the slugs
'n' I say, what a fright
Little darling, it's been a long wet
lonely winter
Little darling, I think that spring
will soon be here
Here come the slugs (do-n-do-do)
Here come the slugs
'n' I say, my flashlight
Little darling, the seedlings
entering slug faces
Little darling, I'm seeing slug
slime everywhere
Here come the slugs
Here come the slugs
'n' I say, slug bucket
Slugs, slugs, slugs, here they come
Slugs, slugs, slugs, here they come
Slugs, slugs, slugs, here they come
Slugs, slugs, slugs, here they come
Slugs, slugs, slugs, here they come
Little darling, I value every living
being
Little darling, but I am chopping
them in two
Here come the slugs (do-n-do-do)
Here come the slugs
'n' I say, my spade please
Here come the slugs (do-n-do-do)
Here come the slugs
(and they stay) 'til summer
'Til summer
Comments:
Slug-hunting is often performed most effectively at night, hence the reference
to "my flashlight." Though almost universally despised among Pacific Northwest gardeners, slugs have their charms.
Here they have the Beetless singing a surprisingly hopeful, cheery tune, whose
message seems to transcend the occasional "downer" lyric. This is the
closest we may ever get to a human-sung slug love song. David George Gordon's Field Guide to the Slug is an essential
reference for anyone living in slug country. For a more personal perspective
read "A Slug-hunter's Awakening," which brought temporary notoriety
to its author when first published in newsletter form (it now appears in The Lost Valley Guide to Ecological Cooking
and Living).
