Creating Community: Designing Ecovillages

What is sustainable community? What does it take to join, start, or maintain an intentional community? This course explores these questions with Lost Valley, a 20-year-old (with origins much older) ecologically-focused community, as a case study and classroom.

In this week long course you will learn the basic concepts in defining (for yourself), creating and maintaining community. You will gain a larger perspective of community by exploring sustainable community at four 'scales', the sustainable urban/rural lifestyle, eco-hoods (ecological neighborhoods), intentional community, and eco-cities. We will explore the unique challenges and benefits of each scale, by covering concepts, looking at existing examples and first hand accounts from people who lived in these scales of community. We emphasis how to start these communities, as well as maintain both the 'green' systems and social networks that keep community alive. While Lost Valley itself will be your primary example of community, through lectures, slide shows and presentations we will cover examples of each scale. While at Lost Valley students will sit in on community events and activities to get a taste of what living in an eco-village is like, on the final day the students will participate in a community design exercise to create their own hypothetical community.
