Session Similarities and Differences

Winter Permaculture Design Course: This is a two-week Permaculture Certificate program. Lost Valley has 15 years of hosting two-week permaculture design courses.

Summer Ecovillage and Permaculture Certificate Program: This is a two-month program, our longest and most comprehensive permaculture-related course. The program was started in 2003, drawing on 15 years of experience hosting two week permaculture design courses and hands-on apprenticeships.   The summer program has time to go into more detail on many subjects and, in particular, has more time for hands-on activities.  Participants camp throughout the summer unless they are physically unable to do so, in which case other arrangements can be made.

Fall Ecovillage and Permaculture Certificate Program: Started in 2006, the fall program is a one month version of the summer program.

The winter program differs significantly from the others in that it only offers the Permaculture Design Certificate, while the others also offer the Ecovillage certificate.  In this intensive two-week winter course, there is not a focus on ecovillages. The fall program will have many hands-on and experiential activities but because of the shorter time frame and cooler weather some will be condensed. Housing for the fall program will be in our dorm rooms, rather than in tents.

The main instructors, resident and visiting, are the same for both programs, but some of the guest instructors may vary.

As an adjunct to the fall program, we will also be offering participants who are accepted into post-course apprenticeships the opportunity to continue their learning.

Post Fall Program Apprenticeships: Apprentices will stay at Lost Valley for one or two more months and work alongside Lost Valley staff members in areas related to the subjects in the program and their interests. Costs for the apprenticeship will be for living at Lost Valley only.

Logistical differences for our permaculture programs:

Accommodations: Because of the cooler weather, participants will stay in a dorm room during the fall and winter courses instead of camping in our meadow as they do during the summer program.

Number of Participants: We will limit the number of participants to a maximum of 20 people during the fall program.  This will provide a tight knit and engaging learning environment. However, since space is limited, the course may fill up early. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis, so we encourage people who know they want to attend to register early to reserve a place.

Instructors: The instructors will include the same visiting and resident instructors for the fall program as for the summer program- Joshua Smith, Tree Bressen, Rick Valley, Tammy Davis, and Marc Tobin. Some of the guest instructors/presenters will be the same as those listed for the summer program. We may also have a few different guest instructors/presenters in addition to or instead of some of those listed for the summer program.

Registration: Simply select the dates of the program you wish to register for from the drop down menu.
